Prayer: Space and Time Matter

"I was glad when they said unto me, we will go into the house of the Lord."

"There's a reason they built those cathedrals."
-Seth Godin

This morning, Seth Godin pointed out that space matters. Sorry astronomers, not outer space, but the space you where accomplish your work, get creative, get angry, or even, pray. This got me thinking...

"Does where we pray matter to God?" It is an interesting question, but the more practical question, is asking, "Does where we pray matter to us?" I believe it matters more than we often think. Because we believe that God is all mighty and all powerful, we do believe God can hear us no matter where we are. Does this mean that skiing, changing the toilet paper, taking down the Christmas tree or falling asleep are the best places and times to pray?

I don't believe God hears you more in a church, or on your knees; but posture and space have a profound impact on your prayer life. Think about where you study, or where you can best focus, or where you enjoy talking to your spouse or loved one? Does it matter where? Am I respecting my friend by calling him while I'm ordering a Latte or between brushing my teeth and going to bed? Often this is how we pray to God. It affects how we view Him. Thankfully, His love overcomes our weakness.

We often think that if we plan to pray at a particular time and in a particular place, we are not praying "from the heart." But do we approach the rest of our life this way? If I want to take my wife out to a really nice dinner, I tend to make a plan. I do some research, make some reservations, and I will even dress different. Think about how you pray, where you pray and when you pray. We can't always make it to church, but we can set aside space, even in our home, or on our lunch breaks that we can focus on offering up our prayers to God. Try a set routine for a week, make a list, and perhaps, try a bible reading plan. The effect this has on your heart will be surprising.
